TreeHouse Health Welcomes RiverSystems LLC as First Emerging Health Care Company
TreeHouse Health, an “innovation center” that seeks to support entrepreneurial growth for both large and emerging health care companies, welcomed its first start-up company to its 13,000-square foot downtown Minneapolis space this week: RiverSystems LLC.
RiverSystems LLC is the company behind HomeStream, a tool comprised of easy-to-use computer-assisted capabilities designed to improve the quality of life for seniors and aging baby boomers and help them live comfortably—and safely—in their homes or wherever they choose, or need, to live.
Founded in 2009 by RiverSystems CEO, Joel Ackerman, HomeStream employs a range of free tools and technology-based services to help seniors live fuller, richer lives right in the convenience of their homes, including the ability to:
- Catch up with grandkids in faraway locales via video calls
- Read their favorite e-books
- Attend Sunday church virtually by livestreaming the service
- Talk face-to-face with their health care provider via video
HomeStream, which has already been used in communities across Minnesota from Hastings to Willmar, is currently being piloted in Red Wing, Minn., by seniors and caregivers free of charge. Through HomeStream’s easy, in-home computer interface, Red Wing seniors and caregivers will have the ability to make video calls to relatives overseas, livestream their local church service on Sunday morning, or watch a production at local schools or theaters—right from the comfort of their own home.
Eventually, HomeStream will also implement a biometric monitoring system that will scan blood pressure, pulse, temperature and other vital signs for seniors and send text message alerts to caregivers and health care providers.
As the first emerging health care company to join TreeHouse Health, Ackerman and RiverSystems LLC were awarded a sizable cash investment to defray the expenses that come along with running and growing a start-up business. But, more importantly, Ackerman and his team will now have access to more than 130 years in health care experience among TreeHouse Health’s leadership team.
“I’m very excited about this opportunity with TreeHouse Health,” says Ackerman. “With the financial resources and brainpower now available to us through TreeHouse, I’m confident, together, we can take HomeStream to the next level by giving seniors the tools they need to live more fulfilling, safer and healthier lives right in their own homes.”
Ackerman and RiverSystems took up residence full-time in the TreeHouse Health space in downtown Minneapolis on Monday, Oct. 14.
“We’re ecstatic to have Joel and RiverSystems as our first emerging health care company here at TreeHouse Health,” says John Blank, chairman at TreeHouse Health. “Joel personifies the passion, commitment and vision we’re looking for in the start-up companies we want to reside here and collaborate with us at TreeHouse Health.”
